We left on a steamy (~30C with the humidex) Monday afternoon, and motored under light winds northwards towards Frying Pan Bay. Around M14-M12, we noticed a looming dark cloud to westward, and checked on the updated forecast. "Risk of Thundershowers" had been upgraded to "Squall Warning, with damaging hail" so we prudently turned around, and raced back to the nearest safe anchorage (Cedar Springs campground, on Beausoleil Island) - the decision being that we could enter the anchorage safely under almost any conditions, and there would be lots of room to swing or drag if need be.

As we arrived, lightning and rain began, and the clouds were bearing down on us quickly. We dropped the anchor, let out 7-1 scope, and dropped chains of the fore and backstays to serve as lightning protection (the mast is grounded properly, to the keel, but I'd rather the lightning not have to go through the hull if we did get hit. The storm passed in about 1.5 hours, with some gusts that were in the 35 knot range, and quite a bit of rain -- but we were on the north edge of the cell and were probably spared the worst of it.

After the storm passed, we hauled up the anchor and motored with a short break for sailing as the wind died down a bit to 15-20 knots up to Frying Pan Bay.

We anchored there for Monday and Tuesday nights.

On Wednesday, we were on a hike on Beausoleil Island when Osito was bitten on the nose by a Massassauga Rattlesnake. I carried him back to the boat (about 45 minutes' walk), then we motored down the small craft route on the east side of Beausoleil while Sonia kept him calm inside the cabin.

The wind was blowing about 20-25 knots, so when we got out onto the main part of Severn Sound, the waves were about 3-4 feet - we had a pretty rough ride as we got out clear of Beausoleil, and reached almost 8 knots motoring downfetch. We arrived back at the marina at about 7pm, got in the car, and drove to the Huronia Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Barrie - arriving there at about 8pm. Osito's face was swollen to about 3 times its normal size by this point. He stayed there overnight, on IV fluids and anti-inflammatories, and we picked him up in the morning with an excellent prognosis. We spent the night in the Marina, and went out for an evening sail to watch the Canada Day fireworks. Friday, we headed out to meet up with Heeling Power, Emerald Night, Las Brisas, and Breathless for the evening in Long Bay on Beausoleil.

The approach to Long Bay - we never saw less than 8 feet of water along this route.

Congratulations are deservedly due to Mark of Emerald Night, who in addition to being the Vice Commodore of the Midland Bay Sailing club was just promoted to Chief of Police for Barrie!

There was little to no wind, so we had to motor up. Osito's IV wound wasn't clotting well due to the medications he was on, so we had to keep changing his dressing and keep him as calm as possible to prevent him from reopening the wound.

We sailed the Mirror dinghy, and discovered the hard way that there was some rot at one of its chainplates - the mast fell down in the middle of a sail as the screws ripped right out of the wood.

That evening, we had a nice campfire on shore, then retired for a well-earned sleep.

We spent the first half of Saturday on the raft, but Tiffany's brother Ryan was driving his wakeboarding boat up to meet us and broke down -- so a rescue party of dinghies had to be arranged to tow him onto the raft. We eventually peeled off of the raft at about 3pm, heading home in the best weather we'd had all week. Jim and Deb on Premie arrived while the rescue party was out, andrjoined the raft as well - making it a 7 boat raft!

We sailed most of the way home at about 5-6 knots, with both sails up. A beautiful way to end the week.

Upon arrival at the Marina, we stopped at the gas dock and put in 18 liters of diesel (the diesel tank was full when we left the marina - we probably burnt most of that while motoring back with Osito) and tried to get a pumpout of the head tank, but the machine was broken and couldn't build suction so we had to leave the spare keys with the marina and they will pump it out sometime this week.

Quite a week! Hopefully the next time we head up will be less eventful.
